The U.S. President Joe Biden warned Congress on Tuesday that failing to support Ukraine financially would play into Putin's hands, attributing blame to former President Donald Trump for politicizing national security.

Biden directly criticized Trump, his anticipated opponent in the upcoming November elections, accusing him of pressuring Republican lawmakers to reject a $118 billion bill. This bill aimed to fund Ukraine's military in exchange for strict immigration measures, a demand from the Republican Party.

"We can't abandon Ukraine now. That's exactly what Putin wants," Biden emphasized. "Backing this bill means standing up to Putin. Opposing it means doing exactly what he wants."

Biden highlighted that the bill included the "toughest border security reforms ever," addressing immigration concerns.

Despite initially insisting on immigration reform as a condition for renewing aid to Ukraine, Republicans, under pressure from Trump, have signaled they won't support the bill, jeopardizing Ukraine's defense efforts against Russia.

This decision not only affects Ukraine's access to essential weaponry and ammunition but also halts the progress made in securing the U.S.-Mexico border against undocumented migrants, despite bipartisan support for such measures.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell admitted that many members felt passing the bill into law would be challenging.

Biden accused Trump of exploiting the situation for political gain, stating, "Donald Trump sees this as a political disadvantage. Instead of prioritizing the nation's interests, he's focused on weaponizing the issue."

"For the past day, he's been pressuring Republicans in Congress, trying to intimidate them," Biden added. "It seems they're giving in to his demands."

Trump had been consistently criticizing the bill, even as his own party leaders worked towards a compromise on border security, thereby complicating efforts to support Ukraine.

In response to Biden's remarks, a spokeswoman for Trump labeled the speech "embarrassing" and claimed that under Trump's leadership, the border had been the most secure in U.S. history.

Biden and Trump present vastly different approaches to Ukraine, with Biden advocating for support to counter Russian aggression, while Trump promotes an isolationist "America First" stance.

Domestically, Biden has pushed for a compassionate immigration policy, although Republicans highlight record-high migrant apprehensions as a significant issue.
