WhatsApp's Latest Update Involves Payment for Backup Storage, Not App Usage

WhatsApp, the globally popular instant messaging platform, is undergoing a policy shift that may impact users who rely on Google Drive for their backups. Contrary to earlier practices where WhatsApp backups were excluded from the 15GB free storage offered by Google Drive, the new policy could see these backups contributing to the overall storage cap.

Previously, users enjoyed the convenience of backing up their WhatsApp data without affecting their 15GB free Google Drive space. However, with the evolving policy, it seems WhatsApp backups will now be considered part of this storage allocation. The 15GB limit has already been a concern for users who store photos, emails, and other details, and adding WhatsApp backups to the mix could quickly deplete this space.

This update is currently being rolled out to WhatsApp beta users and may potentially be implemented for all users in the first quarter of 2024. It's crucial to understand that this change doesn't mean WhatsApp usage itself will incur charges; instead, users might have to invest in additional storage space for their backups.

In case the 15GB space is filled, users will need to purchase extra storage, available through Google One subscription plans. Google One offers three plans – Basic, Standard, and Premium – each providing users with monthly storage allocations at varying costs. The Basic plan offers 100GB for ₹130, the Standard plan provides 200GB for ₹210, and the Premium plan grants 2TB for ₹600 per month.

As of now, Google One is offering discounts on these plans, making it more economical for users. The Basic plan can be obtained for ₹35 per month, the Standard plan for ₹50 per month, and the Premium plan for ₹160 per month. Additionally, there are discounts available for annual subscriptions.

By taking advantage of these discounted plans, users can secure extra free space from Google and alleviate concerns about WhatsApp backup storage. This way, they can continue to use WhatsApp without worrying about exceeding their Google Drive storage limits.
