In recent weeks, Google has laid off several employees, including its entire Python team. This decision is part of a strategy to cut costs by hiring cheaper labor outside the United States. A Former Google Python team member expressed sadness at the decision, calling it "by far the best job" in his 20-year career. Another Google employee shared how difficult it was to see their entire team, including their manager, laid off and replaced by workers in another country.
The US Python team, which had fewer than 10 members, was responsible for maintaining a stable version of Python at Google, updating thousands of third-party packages, and developing a type-checker. Google is now reportedly building a new team from scratch in Munich, Germany. This restructuring seems to be part of a broader trend, as Google has also made cuts across its real estate and finance departments, affecting teams such as treasury, business services, and revenue cash operations.
Earlier in the year, Google let go of hundreds of employees across multiple teams, including engineering, hardware, and assistant teams, as the company ramps up investment in its artificial intelligence offerings. The company's finance chief, Ruth Porat, announced plans to expand growth in locations like Bangalore, Mexico City, and Dublin, indicating a shift in focus and investment for the company.
