Foreign Minister S Jaishankar has said that relations between India and Canada are going through a very difficult phase at this time. In his first reaction after the return of 41 Canadian diplomats from New Delhi, the Foreign Minister said at the Kautilya Economic Conclave on Sunday, “We cannot tolerate any kind of interference in our affairs.” Let us tell you that on the diplomatic dispute, Jaishankar gave a blunt reply to the advice given by America and Britain a day earlier to follow the Vienna Convention. He said in an event that there is no violation of the Vienna Convention in asking Canada to reduce the number of diplomats. He has also said that there is a clear provision for equality in the Vienna Convention. Parity means how many diplomats of another country are there in one country and how many diplomats of that country are there in another country. Continuing his talk, the Foreign Minister said that India had to implement this because the continuous interference in our domestic affairs by Canadian personnel has increased our concern even more.

Objection to Canada's political policies: Foreign Minister Jaishankar has said that India has also expressed objection to a section of Canadian politics and the policies implemented because of it. India has been expressing objection to pro-Khalistan activities in Canada. Jaishankar has further said in his talk that now no major danger is far away. A large part of this will clearly be economic. When it comes to fundamentalism and extremism, the danger of it spreading like cancer cannot be underestimated. Taking his point further, the Foreign Minister has said that terrorism has been used as a weapon of statecraft. Israel-Hamas has spoken about the war, nothing can be said yet as to how deep its effects are going to be. He has also called the Russia-Ukraine war as the second major cause of geopolitical instability across the world.

Will issue visas but: S Jaishankar has even said that India had to stop issuing visas to Canada because it was not safe for Indian diplomats to work there amid constant threats and extremist activities. If we see progress in the security situation of our diplomats, we will start issuing visas again.

Relations soured after the murder of Nijjar: After the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, relations turned sour when Canada blamed Indian agencies for this and asked a top diplomat to leave the country. India completely rejected the allegations. Under his pressure, Canada had to recall 41 of its diplomats from India on Friday.
