New Delhi: Gold hall marking will become mandatory in the entire country after two days. After giving relief to jewellers from the compulsion of hall marking for almost two years, the Central Government has made up its mind to make hall marking mandatory on gold jewellery from April 1. This time the government is not in a mood to extend the time limit for hall marking.

It is being said that after the implementation of the compulsion of hall marking, the possibility of cheating consumers in the business of gold jewellery and gold ornaments will end. Hall marking was to be made mandatory from 2019 itself for the sale of gold jewellery and gold ornaments. Various jewellers organisations across the country had demanded relief from the government, saying that they should be given some time to liquidate the pre-made stock of gold jewellery and gold ornaments, or else they would have to face huge losses.

On the demand of the Jewellers Association, the date for implementation of hall marking has been extended several times in the last two years. Now it has been clarified by the central government that enough time has been given to the jewellers to clear the old stock. Therefore, there will be no further extension of this time limit. The same 6-digit alphanumeric hallmark, Unique Identification (HUID), will be mandatory on gold jewellery or ornaments after the implementation of gold hallmarking. With this, all the information related to gold adulteration—its purity, its producer, etc.—will be easily available. Along with this, the general consumer will be able to sell or exchange their gold ornaments according to the standard of purity mentioned in the hallmark, anywhere in the country if needed.
