Patna: So far 16 people have died in mysterious circumstances in Deuruwa in Betia district of Bihar. Police have detained 5 people in the case. Villagers say the men died due to the consumption of poisonous liquor. Some of those who died are reported to have been confirmed to be drinking alcohol. However, the administration has not yet made any statement on the matter.

The incident took place in Deoruva village of Lauria block of Bettiah and Baghi village near it. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Renu Devi said that the matter is under investigation. The concerned authorities are working on it. Locals are not willing to talk about the issue. We are monitoring the whole situation. Earlier on Friday, Bettiah in charge of SP Kiran Kumar Gorakh Jadhav had said that an FIR was being registered against Mumtaz who sold liquor and raids were being conducted. Talking to the media, villagers said that everyone in the village knows that liquor is sold in the village but no one wants to get into a controversy. The government and the administration should stop it otherwise the future of this village is in darkness.

District Collector Kundan Kumar said, "We have learned that some people have died under suspicious circumstances in the last 2-3 days in Champaran village.'' However, his family and villagers have not admitted to drinking alcohol. An FIR has been registered and an inquiry has been initiated into the matter.
