Chennai: Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin on Friday wrote to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar urging him to protect the Indian community in South Africa. South Africa has a large population of Tamils. Stalin's letter comes amid reports of riots in South Africa, where people of Indian origin are being killed and thousands of businesses owned by the Indian community are being destroyed.

MK Stalin further said that it was a matter of "great concern and urgency" and urged Jaishankar to once again initiate diplomatic measures with the South African government. He said the need for restoration of peace and harmony at the earliest should be affected and adequate measures should be taken. He said to protect the lives and property of the Indian community, including the people of Tamil Nadu. It has also been reported that the Indian community, including a large part of the Tamil population, has suffered financial losses. It turns out that they are also likely to increase tensions for them there.

There has been a civil war-like situation in South Africa. Former President Jacob Zuma was produced before the court on July 8. From then on, his supporters started protesting and soon turned into an unruly violent mob. Malls, shopping centers, business centers were looted. Many establishments were set on fire. In Africa, sentiment against Indians is also beginning to flare up. Authorities have sought an opportunity to loot and chaos through riots, Indians are being targeted.
