Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar declared on Friday that the caste-based survey has been successfully concluded, and the gathered data is currently being organized for public disclosure. Kumar stressed that this survey will prove advantageous for all segments of society. He stated, "The caste-based headcount exercise in the state has been completed. Now the data is being compiled and it will soon be made public.'
Kumar underscored that this comprehensive survey will aid the government's efforts towards the development of various societal sections, especially those belonging to marginalized communities. He emphasized that the compiled data will guide the government in identifying regions that require focused development. Kumar expressed optimism that other states will follow Bihar's lead in conducting similar surveys.Addressing opposition from some political parties against the caste-based census, Kumar noted that this decision had received unanimous approval from leaders across political parties, including the BJP. As a result, he expressed his indifference towards current comments from the BJP.
"The survey report will significantly enhance the government's ability to implement welfare schemes for socially and economically disadvantaged groups. We have consistently supported the caste census right from the beginning," Kumar affirmed. Kumar also commented on the Centre's actions to seek permission from the Supreme Court for involvement in the ongoing case regarding the caste-based survey. He clarified that the apex court had never instructed a halt to the exercise. Additionally, he pointed out that the Patna High Court had already dismissed petitions challenging the validity of Bihar's caste survey, affirming the state government's initiative as legally valid.
The Centre's recent move to intervene in the ongoing hearing of PILs challenging the Patna High Court's decision was noted. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, argued that the matter has far-reaching consequences, warranting the government's opportunity to present its response on the legal aspects without favoring any side. The Supreme Court granted the Centre a week to submit an affidavit and scheduled the hearing for August 28 regarding petitions against Bihar's caste survey decision.
