Bilateral Talks: Presidents of Indonesia and China Foster Stronger Ties through Joint Projects

Beijing: Thursday in southwest China, Indonesian President Joko Widodo met with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss joint projects, including Indonesia's development of a new capital.

The governments of China and Indonesia reportedly signed a number of agreements, including one to exchange knowledge and experience for the capital project, according to Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi. Next year, Indonesia plans to move its capital from Jakarta, which is located on its main island of Java and is crowded and polluted, to Nusantara, which is located on Borneo.

According to a statement from Widodo, the two leaders also discussed regional issues, including China's relations with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, investments, and cooperation in the fields of health, research, and technology.

The president of Indonesia, whose nation is hosting this year's ASEAN chairmanship, stated that "the Indo-Pacific is a strategic region that we must protect as a peaceful and stable area."

In addition to meeting with Chinese businesspeople to discuss potential investments in Indonesia, particularly in the petrochemical, renewable energy, and healthcare sectors, Widodo is on a three-day visit to China.

He also has a commitment to Chengdu's FISU World University Games opening ceremony. The Group of 20 major developed and emerging economies includes China and Indonesia. The largest trading and investment partner of Indonesia is China.

Indonesia desires a larger role as a nickel and other raw material supplier to China's rapidly expanding electric car manufacturers.
