Lucknow: A woman in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, was surprised to find a payment receipt for Rs 197 crore, while her actual electricity bill was a mere Rs 4,950. Chohari Devi, the electricity consumer with domestic connection number 197****000, initially received the correct power bill of Rs 4,950. However, the situation took an unexpected turn when her son went to pay the bill and was handed a payment receipt reflecting the astronomical amount of Rs 197 crore.
The error occurred when the electricity operator mistakenly copy-pasted the consumer's 10-digit connection ID into the column intended for the bill amount. This typographical mistake caused a significant discrepancy. Fortunately, the mistake was swiftly identified during reconciliation by senior officials in Lucknow, prompting corrective action.
Ashu Kalia, Chief Engineer of Gorakhpur Distribution, clarified that the inconvenience resulted from a typographical error. The erroneous payment receipt for Rs 197 crore was promptly canceled under the instructions of the data center located at Shakti Bhawan in Lucknow. Kalia reassured that the receipt has been corrected, addressing the anomaly caused by the inadvertent mistake.
