Bal Gangadhar Tilak is well known as the independence activist but he was also a teacher, reformer, lawyer and journalist. He was born on July 23, 1856, in Maharashtra. He has done much work for the betterment and welfare of the society as well as country. On the Occasion of his birthday, we are presenting some interesting facts about his life which would like to know.

Birth Anniversary: Remembering freedom fighter Mangal Pandey

  • Britishers used to call him ‘The Father of the Indian Unrest’
  • He was the first leader of Indian Independence movement, therefore, he was also known as ‘Father of Swaraj’
  • In 1890, He joined Indian National Congress
  • In 1880, he started he started his own newspaper ‘Kesari’

  • He had a political regime with Lala Lajpat Rai and Bipin Chandra Pal, therefore, they are also known as ‘Lal-Bal-Pal triumvirate’.
  • With Jamshed Tata, he founded Bombay swadeshi  Co-op stores to promote the freedom movement

 

  • He also gave a famous quote "Swarajya is my birthright and I shall have it!"

 

  •  On his 150th Birth anniversary, Government of India launched a coin to commemorate Tilak
  • ‘Lokmanya: Ek Yug Purush’ is a movie which is based on the life story of Tilak which was directed by Om Raut.
