Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee OBE, the  Indian military officer who was the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Air Force, born on 5 March 1911.

Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee holds the distinction of being the first Chief of the Air Staff of the Indian Air Force following India's independence. He initially enlisted in the Royal Air Force before subsequently joining the Indian Air Force as one of its first officers. He had a three-decade long, illustrious career during which he received numerous accolades. The "Father of the Indian Air Force" is a title he attained.

Subroto Mukerjee's career spanned nearly three decades and was awarded many honors until his untimely demise in 1960. He has been called the "father of the Indian Air Force".

Born into a Bengali family, he was educated in India as well as in the United Kingdom. He joined the Royal Air Force and later in 1933 was one of the first recruits of the Indian Air Force (IAF). He flew with the No. 1 Squadron IAF from 1933 to 1941. He saw widespread action in the northwestern border province. It was noted during this tenure and in dispatch. He attended Staff College, Quetta in 1941 before returning to Command No.1 Squadron in 1942. He took command of RAF Station Kohat from 1943 to 1944 before going to Air Headquarters as Director of Flight Training. He was awarded the OBE in 1945.

After the partition of India, he was appointed Deputy Air Commander, Royal Indian Air Force. He was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Air Force in 1954, after completing the Higher Command course at Imperial Defense College. He oversaw the change in an all-jet force of the Air Force. From 1955, he also served as the Chairman of the Chief of Staff Committee. He died during a visit to Tokyo in 1960. His sudden death came as a shock to the Air Force and the nation and he was cremated with full military honors in New Delhi.

In February 2012, he was made the All India President of INTTUC, replacing Sobhandeb Chatterjee. [10] He contested from Bankura in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and lost to BJP's Subhash Sarkar. Under the leadership of Shri Subrata Mukherjee, the Public Health Engineering Department of the Government of West Bengal has initiated some very innovative yet useful water treatment projects. 

During the 2015 Durga Puja Festival a water ATM was set up at Eklavia Evergreen Club, which would distribute 1 liter of pure, cold drinking water at Rs. 2. Seeing the success of Water ATM during the Puja, the present Chief Minister of the state, Smt. Mamta Banerjee adopted this project across the state. The Department of Public Health Engineering also started the project of providing packaged mineral water, prandara in the same year.
