New Delhi: The Civil Aviation Secretary, Vumlunmang Vualnam, shared exciting plans for the growth of India's aviation sector, announcing that the country's domestic airlines are set to increase their fleet to 1,400 aircraft within the next five years. Currently, the fleet consists of approximately 800 planes, with leading carriers like IndiGo and Air India making substantial orders to expand their operations.
Speaking at an event in the capital, Vualnam also highlighted the expanding opportunities for women in the aviation industry, especially in the emerging drone segment, offering new avenues for career growth.
Over the past decade, India's airport network has seen impressive growth, more than doubling from 74 to 157 airports. Additionally, the number of passengers has surged, now reaching 22 crore, up from 11 crore in the last 10 years.
Vualnam's remarks were made at the 'Giving Wings to Dreams Awards 2024,' an event organized by Women in Aviation India in collaboration with the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
The Rs 120-crore Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for drones, which was launched in 2021, has proven to be a significant success. Companies benefiting from this scheme have seen remarkable growth, with their overall turnover soaring to Rs 1,400 crore. Initially introduced with an outlay of Rs 120 crore for three financial years (2021-22 to 2023-24), the scheme aimed to boost the drone manufacturing sector and make India a global hub for drone technology. With the scheme now concluded, the positive impact on the industry is clear, as it has fostered innovation, attracted investment, and created numerous job opportunities. The success of this initiative is expected to pave the way for similar schemes in other sectors, further supporting the government's vision of a self-reliant and technologically advanced economy.
