On the issue of citizenship, Bharatiya Janata Party has accused Congress and AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi of misleading Muslims. BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain on Thursday appealed to the minority community not to come under the guise of opposition parties. He said that once upon a time MA Jinnah misled him on the principle of 2 countries, but now Congress is tricking them into the National Population Register, Detention Center, and National Citizenship Register. Owaisi is also the team B of the Congress. One should not get into the talk of these parties which do politics of distributing Muslims.

In his statement, he said that the NPR exercise first started in the year 2010 under the Congress-led UPA government. Congress then stated the need for NRC. While the current BJP-led NDA government has clarified that NPR will have nothing to do with the citizenship register.
