New Delhi: The strength of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Parliament has increased tremendously, while the strength of the Congress has decreased. For the first time in the Upper House of Parliament, the BJP has touched the 100 mark. The BJP has become the first party to achieve this feat after 1990. The BJP has achieved the feat of having 100 members in the Rajya Sabha after winning one seat each in Assam, Tripura and Nagaland in Thursday's elections.

However, the saffron party lost one seat in Punjab in the recent biennial elections to 13 Rajya Sabha seats in six states. However, the party won one seat each from the three northeastern states and Himachal Pradesh, where all five outgoing members were from opposition parties. In Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has won all five seats. The new tally has not yet been released on Rajya Sabha's website.

However, if the seats given to the BJP during the recent elections are added, the number of members in the Rajya Sabha will go up to 100. BJP's IT cell chief Amit Malviya tweeted, "BJP and its allies won both the Rajya Sabha seats from Assam. The BJP has also won the other two seats in the northeast, Tripura and Nagaland. So far the results here are 4/4. The BJP now has 100 members in the Rajya Sabha. No party has been here since 1988.''
