NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to make big gains in West Bengal and Odisha. The Narendra Modi government’s performance, judging by the exit polls numbers, seems to have not been affected by any anti-incumbency factor. The results forecast a significant decline in seat share for the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal and Navin Patnaik-led Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in Odisha.

Most exit polls predicted 11-18 seats of the total 42 in the state to BJP. Likewise, the saffron party is shown winning between 6 and 12 of the 21 seats in Odisha, with the exception of India Today-Axis My India predicting a clean sweep for BJP with 15-19 seats in the state. In 2014, BJP had won just two seats in Bengal and one in Odisha. In the last Lok Sabha elections, the saffron party polled 8.6 million votes and a 17% vote share in Bengal. In Odisha, BJP had an 18% vote share in 2014.
Meanwhile,the BJP appears to have recovered from the setbacks in faced in the Assembly polls in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh - in December last year. As per the Times Now-VMR exit poll, the NDA is expected to win 21 out of 25 seats in Rajasthan. In the state of Chhattisgarh, the saffron party-led alliance is likely to win 7 out of 11 Lok Sabha seats.
The BJP-led NDA is also expected to post a victory in the state of Maharashtra, winning 38 seats out of a total 48 seats. While BJP is expected to win 22 seats in the state, its allies are likely to win 16 seats. BJP fought the Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra in alliance with Shiv Sena.
