Lucknow: Out of the 36 Legislative Council (MLC) seats in the local body area in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP has won 33 seats, while the Samajwadi Party (SP) could not even open its account. Out of the 36 MLC seats in the state, BJP candidates had already won 9 seats unopposed and out of the remaining 27 seats where polling was held, 24 seats were won. The BJP has lost three seats. Thus, the BJP may have made history by winning 33 seats and achieved the majority mark in the MLC, but the saffron party has still not been able to break the record of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).
If you look at the political history of UP, it is seen that usually in the MLC elections of the local body area, the ruling party has been winning and once again the same pattern has been seen. BJP's MLCs have been elected in 33 seats of UP, out of which 9 members have already won unopposed, while 24 have won in the results of Mangalwar. On the other hand, Akshay Pratap Singh of Jansatta Party won from Pratapgarh seat, Annapurna Singh, independent from Varanasi seat and Vikrant Singh, independent from Azamgarh seat.
While in power, the BJP has won 33 of the 36 MLC seats, while in the 2010 MLC elections held during the Mayawati government, the BSP had set a record by winning 34 of the 36 seats. While in power in the state, the BSP has been able to win the most MLC seats in the last two decades.
