Washington: In a significant development, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized that Iran will not be granted sanctions relief in exchange for the potential release of five Americans detained in Iran.

On Thursday, Blinken clarified that a draft deal under consideration involves the release of $6 billion in frozen Iranian funds. However, he underscored that these funds would be placed in a restricted account solely dedicated to humanitarian purposes.

"Iran will not be receiving any sanctions relief," Blinken declared, highlighting that the allocated money belongs to Iran and will be utilized exclusively for humanitarian endeavors.

He expressed the U.S. government's ongoing communication with the families of the five detained Americans, expressing hope that their impending release could mark the "beginning of the end of their nightmare."

While the specifics of the agreement are yet to be finalized, Blinken's statements indicate a steadfast U.S. stance against providing significant concessions to Iran in exchange for the prisoners' release.

The impending release of these individuals constitutes a significant win for the Biden administration, which has been under mounting pressure to secure their freedom. The detained Americans faced various charges, including espionage and violating Iranian airspace.

This development also holds broader implications for the complex U.S.-Iran relationship. Stretching back decades, the two nations have been at loggerheads, but the potential prisoner release signals a possible shift towards a more constructive engagement approach by the Biden administration.

However, it's crucial to recognize that this agreement does not address the underlying contentious issues fueling tensions between the U.S. and Iran. Fundamental disagreements over matters such as Iran's nuclear program and its support for terrorist organizations remain unresolved.

The outcome of the prisoner release agreement's potential impact on U.S.-Iran relations remains uncertain. Nevertheless, the forthcoming release of the detained Americans constitutes a positive step, fostering an atmosphere that could facilitate future negotiations.

While it may not single-handedly herald a comprehensive thaw in relations, the release does hold the potential to catalyze a more favorable environment for constructive discussions moving forward.
