Ramallah; During an operation in a refugee camp in the occupied West Bank on Friday, Israeli forces fatally shot a Palestinian man, according to the official Palestinian news agency WAFA. The Israeli military and the Palestinian Health Ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Doctor Amin Khader, director of the Thabet Thabet Government Hospital in Tulkarm, told Palestine TV that the Palestinian man who died had a gunshot wound to the chest, and that there were at least eight other casualties.

The deceased person was identified as Mahmoud Jarrad by the Fatah party, which controls the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank. He was identified as a member but not as a fighter.

Over the past 15 months, violence in the West Bank has gotten worse as a result of increased Israeli raids, Jewish settlers' rampages through Palestinian villages, and Palestinian street attacks.

According to a UN count, fighting has claimed the lives of at least 196 Palestinians and 24 Israeli citizens since January.

The West Bank is one of the territories Israel seized in the Middle East war of 1967 and which the Palestinians want to serve as the foundation of a sovereign state.

Israel imposes military rule over millions of Palestinians there and has persisted in constructing settlements, which are viewed as illegal by most nations but which Israel disputes.

US-mediated negotiations to create a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem broke down in 2014 and don't appear to be picking up again.
