Bhubaneswar: A boat carrying 12 persons, eight of them were tourists, overturned at Chilika Lake on Thursday afternoon due to heavy winds, leaving one person missing. The boat was returning to Balugaon in the Khurda district from Kalijai island, which is located within the lake. While the search for missing Raj Kishor Khuntia, a 60-year-old shopkeeper from Balugaon, continues, police and residents have rescued 11 persons.

According to police sources, the incident occurred at 4.30 p.m. near Chadheiguha. A storm erupted, bringing with it strong winds and thundershowers. The boat began to swing and tip as it lost its balance. Some of the passengers attempted to save themselves by jumping into the lake.

"Around 5 p.m., we received word of the event and raced to the scene." "We were able to save 11 people," said Manas Ranjan Barik, a Balugaon sub-divisional police officer. Eight visitors from Remuna in the Balasore district were saved, along with one native from Balugaon and two boatmen.

"The rescued persons were brought to the government hospital in Balugaon. They're all doing well. The search for the missing person is underway, Barik said. The rescue operation included local fisherman, police, and firefighters, he added.
