Not every work of art manages to win the respect it deserves in the constantly changing world of Bollywood, where new films are released every Friday. There is a subset of films that, in spite of their potential and artistic efforts, fall flat with the audience when they are screened. These films, which are frequently referred to as "unappreciated gems," highlight the erratic nature of audience response and the complexity of the cinematic landscape.

1. "Lakshya" (2004)
The Farhan Akhtar-directed film "Lakshya," which stars Hrithik Roshan, explores the journey of a young man discovering his purpose in life against the backdrop of the Kargil War. The movie initially had trouble engaging viewers despite having a compelling story and excellent performances. But as time went on, it became well-known for its accurate portrayal of personal growth and national pride.

2. "Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola" (2013 )
Imran Khan and Anushka Sharma starred in this quirky comedy directed by Vishal Bhardwaj. While examining sociopolitical themes, it highlighted the contrast between urban and rural life. Unfortunately, the unconventional plot and dark humour of the movie failed to connect with general audiences, leading to a lacklustre response.

3. "Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year" (2009).
In this film, which was directed by Shimit Amin, Ranbir Kapoor portrayed a struggling salesman. Despite positive reviews and praise for Kapoor's portrayal and the film's relatable theme, the box office results were less than anticipated. It may have been ahead of its time in emphasising moral business conduct and the difficulties faced by common people in the corporate world.

4. "Saat Khoon Maaf" (2011)
Priyanka Chopra was the star of this film, which was directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and featured a fantastic ensemble cast. Mainstream audiences weren't particularly drawn to the bleak and intricate plot centred on a woman's seven marriages and her quest for self-discovery. But Chopra's versatile performance and the film's unconventional storyline won praise.

5. "Mera Naam Joker" (1970)
Despite being a cinematic marvel, Raj Kapoor's ambitious project "Mera Naam Joker" experienced commercial failure upon its initial release. Perhaps ahead of its time, audiences did not fully appreciate this extensive story about a clown's life and the difficulties he encounters due to its complex storytelling and emotional depth.

6. "Swades" (2004)
Shah Rukh Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker's "Swades" focused on the diaspora and patriotism issues. The movie received praise from critics for its sincere approach, but it had trouble making money at the box office. It has developed a cult following over time thanks to its thought-provoking plot and Khan's deft performance.

7. "Andhadhun" (2018)
Sriram Raghavan's "Andhadhun" encountered early difficulties at the box office, despite ultimately becoming a critical and financial success. Audiences were uncertain what to expect because of the film's unusual plot, which combined dark comedy and thriller elements. The success was eventually brought about by favourable word-of-mouth and favourable reviews.

8. "Chhapaak" (2020)
"Chhapaak," which was directed by Meghna Gulzar and starred Deepika Padukone, explored the delicate subject of acid attack survivors. Despite Padukone's committed performance and the realistic portrayal in the movie, its intense subject matter presented difficulties. It sparked discussions about societal issues in spite of its initial underwhelming box office performance.

9. "Rangoon" (2017)
Saif Ali Khan, Kangana Ranaut, and Shahid Kapoor starred in Vishal Bhardwaj's World War II-themed film "Rangoon." Despite having beautiful cinematography and an ambitious story, the movie didn't do as well as it was expected to. The film's mixture of historical drama, romance, and war elements may have caused the audience's mixed reactions.

10. "Jagga Jasoos" (2017)
With Ranbir Kapoor as its lead and Anurag Basu as its director, "Jagga Jasoos" sought to produce a distinctive musical journey. It received a lukewarm reception from audiences due to its whimsical storytelling style and musical format. The movie struggled to attract a wide audience despite its innovative approach.

Bollywood is evidence of the wide range of tastes and preferences of viewers. Others, equally deserving in terms of storytelling and performances, fail to pique the public's interest while some films go on to become instant hits. The aforementioned films serve as a helpful reminder that a film's box office success isn't always an indication of its impact or quality. Instead, these "unappreciated gems" emphasise the complex interactions between imagination, promotion, timing, and audience perception, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the cinematic journey.
