Mumbai: The Bombay High Court today directed the Civil Aviation Ministry to finalise its policy of naming airports. The court said that, there has been a recent cabinet reshuffle. In such a situation, the new minister should first complete the work. Since 2017, this policy has been in the draft, it should no longer remain at this stage. Jyotiraditya Scindia took over as the Ministry of Civil Aviation today.
Madhya Pradesh stalwart BJP leader Scindia was sworn in as cabinet minister on Wednesday. He joined the BJP in March 2020 and is currently a member of the Rajya Sabha. Scindia has taken over as the ministry at a time when the civil aviation sector is facing difficult conditions due to the corona virus epidemic. Demand in the sector has been severely affected and airlines are facing an economic crisis. The government is also pursuing the process of disinvestment of national carrier Air India.
In early 2017, it was reported that the government was considering a proposal to name existing airports as well as future greenfield airports after cities inorder to name them after individuals. The centre has attributed the same to alleged inconvenience to passengers and foreign tourists in case the name is not familiar.
