LONDON: The next UK Prime Minister will inherit a mess that some members of the governing Conservative Party believe will be impossible to manage, media reports said.
With just 6 weeks until Boris Johnson's steps through the famous black door of 10 Downing Street, the 2 remaining candidates are making a bad situation worse by rubbing acid into the wounds of a party so badly divided it could be compelled to call an early election and hope for the best, as per reports..
Johnson's successor will be elected by the 47 million adults registered to vote, but by a much smaller group of nearly 160,000 grassroots Conservative Party members. The winner will be announced on September 5.
This means running on issues that the candidates think are most likely to resonate with this extremely tiny and narrowly varied group of voters.
"Party members are typically in their late 50s. Almost half are of pensionable age, and the majority are White "Tim Bale, a professor of politics at Queen Mary University of London who has done significant research on the Conservative Party, said.
"They primarily reside in southern England and are content materially. They support a strong stand on law and order, they support low taxes, but they think that public services, particularly schools, police, and, of course, the health system, are crucial and should be properly supported " Bale said.
