Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister today, March 15, announced that a special three-tier committee comprising scientific experts will be formed to conduct a probe the waste dump yard fire at Brahmapuram in Kochi .
Chief Minister Vijayan stated today in the Assembly that a Special Investigation Team of the State police will look into the case filed in connection with the Brahmapuram fire. The chief minister announced that a vigilance investigation would also be carried out into the origin of the fire as well as the operations of the plant dating back to its inception.
According to the Chief Minister, there were no serious health problems among the locals as a result of the Brahmapuram fire.
It was on March 2, that fire broke out in the plant's garbage mounds.
The chief minister's response was read-out under rule 300 of the procedure and conduct in the Kerala Assembly.
Since the incident, opposition parties including the Congress have been calling for the chief minister to issue a statement.
Thec hief minster said, the waste yard fire was fully extinguished on March 13.
Twelve days after a massive fire broke out at the solid waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram, the government has declared victory over the flames, whose origins remains a mystery, and the toxic fumes which, many fear, might have slow-poisoned the city and its suburbs.
Since March 2, the fires that were playing hide-and-seek in the vast garbage "dumping yard" required the firemen of the Fire and Rescue Services and other organisations to work day and night to contain them. Although the fire may have been put out, the mysteries the flames sparked must continue to stump the authorities for some time. The blatant mismanagement of Kochi's mounting garbage problems has been exposed by the fire outbreak and the drawn-out containment effort.
