Bolsonaro had earlier claimed in March that he had been a player in the past and even if he got the virus, he would still have a mild cold. The President said that his main objective behind the withdrawal of football is to remove unemployment and related problems. When the football matches were stopped in March, regional level matches were going on. The national championship was to start in May but no concrete plans have been made for it yet. Bolsonaro and his son spoke to the heads of two of Rio's top clubs, Vasco di Gama and Flamengo, on 19 May. Rio Mayor Marcello Crivella has given permission to start practice in June and he thinks that matches can begin to be held in empty stadiums sometime in July.
