Brasilia: Brazil reported 20,548 new COVID-19 cases in the past day. With the addition of the new cases, national count to 7,504,833. The country's health ministry said Monday, the nationwide COVID-19 death toll rose to 191,570 after 431 more deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. Brazil currently accounts for the second-highest number of fatalities at 191,570.

The state of Sao Paulo reported 1,427,752 cases and 45,902 deaths. The city of Sao Paulo announced over the weekend the prohibition of non-essential activities on Jan. 1-3 to avoid crowds during the New Year holiday. 

Talking about the global cases, According to the Johns Hopkins University, The overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped 81.2 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 1.77 million.The US is the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 19,299,960 and 334,830, respectively. India stands at second place in terms of cases at 10,207,871, while the country's death toll soared to 147,901. The countries with a death toll above 20,000 are Mexico (122,426), Italy (72,370), the UK (71,217), France (63,235), Iran (54,814), Russia (54,559), Spain (50,122), Argentina (42,868), Colombia (42,374), Peru (37,474), Germany (30,508), Poland (27,147), South Africa (27,071) Indonesia (21,452) and Turkey (20,135).
