Jerusalem: The Gaza Strip faced another widespread disruption in its internet and phone networks on Wednesday, according to the Palestinian telecommunications agency. This marks the second incident of network blackout within a week in the embattled region.

In a solemn message, the Palestine Telecommunications Company (Paltel) conveyed its regrets to the citizens of Gaza, stating, "To our dear fellow countrymen in our beloved homeland, we must inform you that all communication and internet services in Gaza have been abruptly severed."

Global network monitoring organization, Netblocks, has corroborated the situation, affirming that Gaza is currently grappling with a fresh internet blackout, which is significantly affecting the last remaining major service provider, Paltel. In a statement posted on an undisclosed platform, Netblocks noted, "The impact of this incident is anticipated to result in a complete telecommunications blackout for most residents."

On the ground, an AFP journalist based in Gaza verified the communication disruption and added that their personal mobile phone still had connectivity, thanks to the use of an international SIM card.

Meanwhile, another AFP journalist reported that only individuals with Israeli or Egyptian phone lines were able to maintain mobile phone usage in the border town of Rafah.

It's worth noting that internet and phone networks had experienced a complete blackout just last week, although services were subsequently restored over the weekend.

During the previous outage, the Palestinian militant group, Hamas, had accused Israel of orchestrating the shutdown with the alleged intent of enabling "massacres" within the Gaza Strip. Palestinian telecommunications provider Jawwal had attributed the blackout to Israel's "intensive bombardment" of the region.

Recent days have witnessed intense clashes between Israeli ground forces and militants in Gaza. Israel has been pursuing its mission to "neutralize" Hamas following a series of violent incidents in southern communities that claimed the lives of 1,400 people, predominantly civilians.

In response, Israel initiated a relentless campaign of airstrikes and artillery shelling. According to the health ministry in Hamas-controlled Gaza, the ongoing hostilities have led to the tragic loss of over 8,500 Palestinian lives, with two-thirds of the casualties comprising women and children.
