The impending BRICS summit, set to convene in Johannesburg starting August 24th, is poised to center its discussions primarily around strategies for broadening the scope of this international coalition. China, one of the member countries, will exert considerable effort to propel the BRICS alliance of emerging economies towards a status akin to a full-fledged counterpart to the G7, according to a recent report.

Johannesburg is the chosen venue for the BRICS summit, slated to commence on Wednesday, and is expected to host leaders from various developing nations. Additionally, multiple countries have received invitations to join this coalition, which presently comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, among others.

Even prior to the formal commencement of the summit, indications have surfaced regarding a potential clash of perspectives between India and China concerning the expansion blueprint for the coalition. These two nations, sharing geographical borders and BRICS membership, are anticipated to engage in debates over this matter during the summit, as disclosed by the Australian Financial Review.

A Shift Toward an Anti-Western Platform for BRICS?: Speculation is rife as to whether BRICS should retain its neutral stance as an association designed to safeguard the economic interests of developing nations, or whether it should metamorphose into a political entity that openly challenges Western powers. Credible sources, familiar with the viewpoints of India and China from prior briefings, have reported this burgeoning tension, as documented by the Australian Financial Review.

Quoting an official from China, "Should BRICS expand to encompass a comparable share of global GDP as the G7, our collective global influence will naturally strengthen," echoing the sentiment that a heightened role on the global stage is attainable. Conversely, South Africa's foreign minister, Naledi Pandor, decried the proposed expansion of BRICS as a misguided anti-Western maneuver. On a contrasting note, South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his endorsement of the expansion initiative. Presently, the overarching direction of this agenda remains opaque, awaiting further elucidation.
