The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is set up its toll plaza on a highway for the first time in the country. Before passing through the Atal Tunnel Rohtang, the longest traffic tunnel at the highest altitude in the world, toll tax is now going to be levied from tourist vehicles. A decision on recovery from the local people has not yet been taken.
A toll plaza is going to be set up near Dhundi in the South Portal of the Tunnel. Bro's Atal Tunnel Project, whose proposal has been sent to the Central Government for approval. Bro is expected to get the approval this summer season. It is being said that the maintenance of atal tunnel is going to cost lakhs of rupees every day. Maintenance of the tunnel is a long-lasting process. Therefore, in order to reduce the burden of the government, the BRO has also planned to set up a toll plaza in the South Portal.
The money collected from the toll plaza is going to be spent on the maintenance of the Atal Tunnel. However, it is yet to be decided how much of the vehicles are going to be charged in the toll plazas as well. Since the opening of the tunnel on October 3, 2020, more than 18 lakh vehicles have passed through here so far. Though the BRO had written to the Lahaul-Spiti administration regarding a plan to set up a toll plaza near Jispa in Lahaul, behind the proposed Shinkula tunnel, the local panchayats have refused to give their approval for the same.
The proposal to set up a toll plaza in the South Portal of Atal Tunnel has been prepared and sent to the Central Government for approval, the proposal is awaiting approval from the Centre.
