BHUBANESWAR: Police in Odisha's Balasore district seized over 1 kg brown sugar worth over Rs 1 crore on Tuesday. On November 7, a Special Task Force team raided near Naya Bazar vegetable market and seized brown sugar weighing 1.52 kg from the possession of two drug peddlers, based on intelligence. Ashok Kumar Behera and Bijay Kumar Yadav were the people arrested. The STF stated that while Bapi is a locality, Yadav is a Patna resident.

The defendants were brought before the District and Sessions Judge's court. The STF has opened an investigation under the provisions of the 1985 Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Since its inception in 2020, the STF has seized over 43 kg of brown sugar/heroin and 86.81 quintals of ganja/marijuana, as well as apprehending over 100 drug dealers.

Brown sugar is a sucrose sugar product with molasses that gives it a distinctive brown colour. It's either an unrefined or partially refined soft sugar made up of sugar crystals with some molasses left in them, or it's made by mixing molasses with refined white sugar.
