Budget Session of Parliament to Begin on Jan 31, Budget Presentation on Feb 1

NEW DELHI: The Budget Session of Parliament will take place from January 31 to April 4, 2025, in two phases. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is scheduled to present the Union Budget for the eighth consecutive year on February 1st.

According to the provisional schedule released by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, the session will begin with President Droupadi Murmu addressing a joint session of both Houses of Parliament bothLok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on January 31. Following her speech, the Economic Survey will be tabled.

Kiren Rijiju, Parliamentary Affairs Minister said, Smt. Droupadi Murmu the Honourable President of India,  on the recommendation of India Government,  approved summoning both Houses of Parliament for the Budget Session 2025 from January 31 to April 4, 2025.

He also mentioned that President Murmu’s address to the joint session would take place at 11 am, in the Lok Sabha Chamber on January 31. Both Houses set to  adjourn for a recess on February 13, 2025, and reconvene on March 10, 2025, to review and report on the Demands for Grants of various Ministries and Departments.

The first phase of the Budget Session will consist of nine sittings, running from January 31 to February 13. During this period, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reply to the debate on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address, while Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will respond to discussions on the Budget.

The second phase of the session is expected to take place from March 10 to April 4, after a break for members to review Budget proposals. Discussions during this phase will focus on the Demands for Grants of various ministries.  In total, the Budget Session will include 27 sittings and conclude on April 4.

Last year, in July, Sitharaman presented her seventh Budget shortly after the new government took office. This achievement surpassed late Morarji Desai’s record of delivering six consecutive Budgets.

A prominent figure in the Union Cabinet, Sitharaman has held several key roles since joining the Modi government. Between 2014 and 2017, she served as the Minister of State for Finance, Corporate Affairs, and later as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Commerce and Industry. She was promoted to Defense Minister during PM Modi’s first term and played a pivotal role during the Balakot airstrikes of 2019. Since 2019, Sitharaman has been managing the Finance Ministry under Modi’s second term.
