Bus accident in Peru claims 20 killed leaves 33 injured

Local police reports stated that a passenger bus plummeted into a ravine about 100 metres deep in the northern Peruvian town of Pataz of the La Libertad Department, killing at least 20 people and injuring 33 others.

The accident occurred at 14:40 local time on Wednesday in a rural area between the Andean towns of Tayabamba and Huancaspata, according to the Regional Health Department. According to the report, the Picaflor interprovincial bus was travelling from Tayabamba to Trujillo, the capital of La Libertad, when it skidded off the road.

Soon after the accident, Local residents rushed to the spot to carry out the rescue operation of the injured passengers, who were brought to hospitals in Tayabamba, Huancaspata, and Trujillo. The death bodies were recovered and an inquiry was launched by personnel from the National Police and the Public Prosecutor's Office.
