KALABURAGI: A Hyderabad-bound sleeper bus caught fire in the early hours of Friday in Karnataka's Kalaburagi district, killing at least seven persons.

According to sources, all of the victims were from Hyderabad. A total of 12 passengers were injured and taken to a hospital in Kalaburagi. As per preliminary investigations, 7 to 8 passengers were believed to be trapped inside the burnt bus, according to Isha Panth, Superintendent of Police for the Kalaburagi region. "However, it is impossible to say the actual number of deaths in the disaster at this time," she stated.

The incidnet occurred about 6.30 a.m. on the Bidar-Srirangapatna highway on the fringes of Kamalapur taluk in Kalaburagi district. The bus was on its way to Hyderabad from Goa.

According to police reports, the bus caught fire after colliding with a vehicle. Due to the impact of the accident, the bus slammed with the bridge and drifted off the road. The bus had more than 35 passengers on board at the time of the tragedy.

The bus belonged to the Orange company in Goa.  Locals were unable to approach the bus since it had caught fire shortly after the collision. They informed the cops, fire department, and emergency services.
