Guru Arjan (15 April 1563 – 30 May 1606) was the first martyr of the Sikh faith and the fifth of the ten Sikh Gurus, who compiled writings to create the eleventh, the living Guru, Guru Granth Sahib.

Guru Arjan lived as the Guru of Sikhism for a quarter of a century. He completed the construction of Amritsar and founded other cities, such as Taran Taran and Kartarpur. The greatest contribution Guru Arjan made to the Sikh faith was to compile all of the past Gurus' writings, along with selected writings of other saints from different backgrounds which he considered consistent with the teachings of Sikhism into one book, now the holy scripture: the Guru Granth Sahib.

  • Those who act in ego do not go beyond karma. It is only by Guru's Grace that one is rid of ego. - Guru Arjan
  • In age after age, through all the ages, forever and ever, those who belong to the Guru's Family shall prosper and increase.- Guru Arjan
  • In this world of your parents' home, serve your Husband Lord; in the world beyond, in your in-laws' home, you shall dwell in peace. Meeting with the Guru, be a sincere student of proper conduct, and suffering shall never touch you. -Guru Arjan
  • Those who focus their consciousness on the True Guru are perfectly fulfilled and famous. - Guru Arjan
  • Through the perfect karma of good deeds, one meets the Perfect Guru, whose speech is perfect - Guru Arjan
