Guwahati: By-polls will be held on October 30 in five assembly constituencies of the state, Mariani, Thaura, Bhabnipur, Tamulpur and Gosaigaon seats, an election department official said on Friday. Four in Mariani, five in Thaura, eight in Bhabnipur, nine in Tamulpur and 13 in Gosaigaon, a total of 39 candidates filed nominations, the official said. Meanwhile, at least three independent candidates Hercules Basumatary, Chandi Basumatary and Deben Boro have reportedly withdrew their candidature from the upcoming by-election. Saturday was the last day for withdrawal of nominations.

13 candidates have filed nominations for 28 seats in Gosaigaon. The main candidates are from UPPL, BPF, Congress, AIUDF and some regional organizations. The decisive battle will be between the main parties. In the 2021 Assam Legislative Assembly election, Bodoland People's Front candidate Majendra Narzari won by 70,407 votes.

His nearest rival from UPPL, Somnath Narzari, got 60,064 votes. Four-time Gosaigaon MLA Majendra Narzari died at GMCH in May 2021 due to COVID complications, resulting in a by-election. Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma participated in several public rallies in Mariani, Thaura and Bhabnipur constituencies during the filing of nominations by BJP candidates.
