New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Thursday that two by-elections would be held to fill the vacancies left by the resignation and deaths of two assembly members for the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council. The by-elections for both positions will take place on May 29.

On February 15, 2023, Laxman Prasad "Acharya" resigned, and Banwari Lal passed away the same day.

The ECI defined the election schedule, with notice scheduled for May 11 and the deadline for nominations set for May 18. On May 19, nomination vetting will take place, and on May 22, candidates must withdraw from consideration.

Voting will take place on May 29 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, and vote counting will start at 5:00 pm that same day, the ECI said. By May 31, the electoral process is anticipated to be over.

The Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary has been given a directive by the ECI to designate a senior officer to oversee the application of containment protocols for COVID-19 during election preparations and activities.
