NEW DELHI: In a major push to enhance agricultural practices and improve farmers' livelihoods, the Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has introduced a suite of seven farmers' welfare schemes with a substantial financial backing of Rs 13,966 crore.

One of the key highlights of this initiative is the Digital Agriculture Mission (DAM), which is being launched with a significant investment of Rs 2,817 crore. The DAM aims to integrate advanced technology into farming to benefit farmers. A central feature of this mission is the development of the Agri Stack. This comprehensive system will include several databases such as the Farmers Registry, Village Land Maps Registry, and Crop Sown Registry, all designed to provide detailed records on farmers, land usage, and crop patterns.

In addition, the DAM will feature the Krishi Decision Support System. This innovative system will utilize geospatial data, monitor droughts and floods, and provide weather and satellite information to help farmers make well-informed decisions. It will also include tools for crop yield modeling and insurance, aiding in better planning and risk management.

The government is also directing Rs 3,979 crore towards crop science. This funding will support agricultural research and education, focusing on enhancing food and nutritional security through various initiatives, including plant genetic resource management and genetic improvements for food and fodder crops.

Further investments include Rs 2,291 crore for advancing agricultural education and management. This initiative aligns with the National Education Policy 2020 and aims to modernize agricultural research and education under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.

Additional allocations include Rs 1,702 crore for promoting sustainable livestock health and production, and Rs 860 crore for sustainable horticulture development. The government has also committed Rs 1,202 crore to strengthen Krishi Vigyan Kendras (agricultural science centers) and Rs 1,115 crore for natural resource management.
