The Calcutta High Court on Friday ordered the CBI to investigate the murder of Trinamool Congress leader Bhadu Sheikh, in apparent reprisal for which nine people were burned to death in West Bengal's Birbhum district.

The high court had previously directed the CBI to investigate the murders of nine individuals in Bogtui village.

Prayers were made before a division bench presided over by Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava, requesting that a CBI investigation into the murder of Bhadu Sheikh be ordered as well, saying that the two occurrences were connected.

The bench, which also included Justice R Bharadwaj, ordered the transfer of Sheikh's murder case from the state police to the CBI for a thorough inquiry.

On March 25, the bench directed the West Bengal government-appointed special investigation team to take over the inquiry into the March 21 incident in Bogtui to the CBI.

On March 22, the state DGP stated that the violence in Bogtui occurred within an hour of the murder of Sheikh, the local panchayat's deputy chief. Bogtui is around a kilometre distant from the site of Sheikh's murder.
