Canada has introduced a new initiative granting temporary visas to Gaza residents who have family ties to Canadians. This announcement was made by the Immigration Minister, Marc Miller, on Thursday, offering a potential pathway for individuals in the besieged Gaza Strip to seek refuge in Canada. However, the Canadian government clarified that it cannot ensure safe passage out of Gaza due to the complex circumstances in the region.

The program, set to commence operations by January 9, aims to assist individuals with Canadian family connections. Initially, the government's focus was on evacuating 660 Canadians, permanent residents, as well as their spouses and children, from Gaza.

Under the new initiative, applications will be accepted from individuals having extended family relationships with Canada, encompassing parents, grandparents, siblings, and grandchildren. Eligible candidates meeting specific criteria will be granted three-year visas, as stated by Minister Miller.

While the exact number of individuals eligible for relocation under this program remains uncertain, Minister Miller anticipates the figure to potentially reach several hundred people. He acknowledged the challenges faced in facilitating the departure of Canadians from Gaza, citing limited capacities to execute such evacuations.

The announcement comes as a lifeline for Gaza residents seeking refuge amidst the ongoing complexities in the region, providing a glimmer of hope for those with family ties in Canada.
