OTTAWA – Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly announced that the country's embassy in Ukraine will re-open soon.
According to the report, Joly stated before the Senate Foreign Affairs and International Trade Committee on Thursday that her goal is to do so within the next few days or weeks. "We just need to make sure that there is a secure environment for workers," Joly was quoted as saying. "We're also looking at what our other Five Eyes colleagues and partners are doing."
On February 12, Canada's embassy in Kiev was shuttered, and diplomatic personnel were moved to the western city of Lviv. Later, the entire crew was relocated to Poland.
Boris Johnson, the British Prime Minister, announced last week that the UK would resume its on-the-ground diplomacy in Ukraine. Similar proposals have been announced by the United States, France, and Italy.
The Canadian government is now under increased pressure to follow suit. On Thursday morning, Joly said she discussed the matter with Larisa Galadza, Canada's ambassador to Ukraine.
Jeremy Kinsman, a former Canadian ambassador to Russia, believes Canada should never have moved its diplomatic mission out of Ukraine. Senators also pressed Joly on how seriously Canada should take Russian President Vladimir Putin's nuclear threat.
