Candidates registration for South Korea's presidential election began on Sunday, with all four key contenders, including the governing party's Lee Jae-myung and the main opposition's Yoon Suk-yeol, registered on the first day. According to media reports, the National Election Commission (NEC) will accept candidacy registration for two days through Monday before the formal 22-day campaign period begins on Tuesday.
According to the NEC, Ahn Cheol-soo of the centrist People's Party and Sim Sang-jeung of the tiny progressive Justice Party filed their candidacies on the first day, alongside Lee of the ruling Democratic Party (DP) and Yoon of the People Power Party (PPP). Candidates can run street campaigns, display election posters, mail campaign materials to voters, and air TV and radio advertising beginning Tuesday and ending one day before the election. Beginning March 3, six days before the election, the results of public polls cannot be released.
Advance voting will take place on March 4-5, ahead of the presidential election on March 9. On February 23-28, overseas Korean people who have registered as absentee voters will vote.
