Cardiac surgical unit opens in key children's hospital in Kabul

Kabul: According to a top health official, the Afghan caretaker government's Ministry of Public Health has opened a heart surgery section in a main children's hospital in Kabul. According to Deputy Public Health Minister Abdulbari Omar, the government opened the surgical facility at Indira Gandhi Children's Hospital in Wazir Akbar Khan, a diplomatic district, on Tuesday.

"Critical surgeries that were previously referred overseas will now be conducted in Afghanistan," Abdulbari Omar told the reporters. "We're working hard to improve this facility and give our people with standardised health care services," he continued.

According to UNICEF data here in Afghanistan, about 135 children died in hospitals or road hospitals in Afghanistan in December of last year from pneumonia and hunger. In December, it requested a $2 billion budget to address to humanitarian needs in Afghanistan.
