Carmakers Maintain Pricing for China-Made EVs Despite EU Tariffs

Carmakers are currently opting not to implement immediate price changes for electric vehicles (EVs) manufactured in China, in light of the European Union's recent decision to impose tariffs. Ahead of the EU's vote on Friday, MG Motor's French division made it clear that it would not adjust the prices of its electric vehicles in France this year, regardless of the outcome of the vote.

In the recent EU vote, 10 member states supported the tariff imposition, while five opposed it, and 12 abstained. MG Motor France has publicly criticized the tariffs, labeling them as “excessive” and arguing that such measures impede Europe’s transition to greener technology. Additionally, sources revealed that MG Motor intends to keep its pricing stable in Italy for the time being, as the company evaluates strategies to optimize sales within the country. Pricing decisions in Italy are made on a monthly basis, suggesting that the situation remains fluid.

Seat, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, has also expressed concerns regarding the EU tariffs, characterizing them as “punitive.” The company highlighted that the future of its China-made Cupra Tavascan EV model could be at risk due to these tariffs. Despite Germany voting against the tariff plan, Seat has confirmed that it will maintain stable pricing for the Tavascan across all deliveries in 2024.

Meanwhile, BYD, a prominent Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, is expected to keep its prices unchanged in Italy through the end of this year, as indicated by an internal source. This decision reflects a broader strategy among carmakers to absorb potential costs while navigating the evolving regulatory landscape in Europe.

Conclusively, car manufacturers, including MG Motor, Seat, and BYD, are currently holding their prices steady for China-made electric vehicles in Europe. They are closely monitoring the market dynamics and assessing strategies to maintain competitiveness amid new tariff regulations.
