Case filed against Sharjeel Usmani over hurting Hindu sentiments

MUMBAI: A case was registered in Pune on Tuesday against Sharijil Usmani, an alumnus of Aligarh Muslim University. The case was filed against Usmani on the allegation that he had allegedly promoted enmity between various groups through his speech at a recent Elgar Parishad event.

In Maharashtra, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had accused Usmani of taking strong action against him, accusing him of hurting religious sentiments. Pune Police Commissioner Amitabh Gupta said that a case has been registered against Usmani under section 153 (A) of the IPC. He said that a complaint was lodged against Usmani by the local leader of BJP Yuva Morcha Pradeep Gavade. He said that further investigation is going on in the case.

On the other hand, BJP veteran and former Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis alleged on Tuesday that Usmani had scorned the sentiments of Hindus during his speech at the recently held Elgar Parishad conference in Pune and he took a strong stand against Usmani Demanded action. The conference was held on Saturday and the participants were famous novelist Arundhati Roy, former IPS officer SM Mushrif, former Bombay High Court Judge BG Kolse-Patil and Usmani.
