A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens which lies behind the iris and the pupil.

So what causes cataract?

Common cause of cataract is the increase in age. As we age, some of the protein may clump together and start to cloud a small area of the lens, this is cataract. It may grow larger and cloud more of the lens, making it harder to see. Other causes are previous eye surgery, hypertension, ultra violet radiation, obesity, diabetes and family history.

The treatment for cataract...

When symptoms begin to appear, you may be able to improve your vision for a while using new glasses, magnification, appropriate lighting or other visual aids. When your prescription glasses can't clear your vision, the only effective treatment for cataracts is surgery.

Cataract surgery is very successful in restoring vision. During surgery, the surgeon will remove your clouded lens and in most cases replace it with a clear, plastic intraocular lens that remains a permanent part of your eye. After the procedure, you'll have some discomfort for a few days. Healing generally occurs within eight weeks. If you need cataract surgery in both eyes, your doctor will schedule surgery to remove the cataract in the second eye after you've healed from the first surgery.
