India commences the nationwide celebrations of 75 years of its Independence on Friday from Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat which will be flagged off by Prime Minister Modi as a twenty-first day 'Dandi March", thus following the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi to commemorate the march he undertook in 1930.
The government-sponsored celebrations entitled as "Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav" (Diamond jubilee of Independence) will continue for 75 weeks at 75 places, culminating on August 15, 2022. The Prime Minister told the BJP MPs at their weekly parliamentary party meeting to participate in the celebrations. He wanted to make an announcement about the celebrations in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, but he had to give up after the Congress, the main Opposition, refused to temporarily stop the pandemonium it is carrying on Since Monday to discuss the unprecedented hike in petrol and diesel prices and the unresolved issue of the farmers camping at Delhi borders to press for the withdrawal of three controversial farm laws enacted last September.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said the Speaker had allowed the PM to make a statement on the celebrations, but he would do it in the Lok Sabha whenever the peace is restored and the Opposition is willing to listen to him on his plans for celebrating the Independence.
