New Delhi: The Central government has issued an advisory to the states and Union Territories to provide 'work from home' to lactating mothers during the corona epidemic. The Centre has advised that such mothers should be allowed to work from home for at least a year from the date of birth of the child during the corona epidemic.
The Ministry of Labour and Employment said in a statement that as part of new steps taken to protect workers, especially mothers feeding themselves, during the corona crisis, the government has issued an advisory to all state and union territory governments to encourage work from home for lactating mothers. The statement said that under Section 5 of the Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Act, 2017, counselling has been issued under the provision of allowing lactating mothers to work from home.
Under the provision, if the nature of work given to lactating mothers is such that they can 'work from home', the employer can allow them to work on mutual consent even after maternity leave. In view of the threat posed to lactating women and their children during the global epidemic, the Ministry of Labour and Employment has issued the advisory to all states and Union Territories.
