Hearings have started in the Supreme Court on the demand for legal recognition of same-sex marriages. The Centre has filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court to know the stand of all the states in this case. For this, the Centre has also written letters to the states seeking their views on the matter.
The Centre had earlier urged the Supreme Court to make all states parties to proceedings on petitions seeking the right for same-sex couples to marry. But the court rejected this request. However, now the Centre has written to the states, seeking their views on the matter.
According to the information received so far, the petitioner side is also appealing to the Supreme Court to recognise same-sex marriage, citing the right to live life with equality and dignity. On the other hand, the central government strongly opposed the hearing and said that this subject is not one where five learned people sit and decide about the whole society.
In such a situation, the Centre had requested to the Supreme Court that all the states be made parties to the proceedings on the petitions demanding marriage for homosexuals. However, the court rejected this request. Now the Centre has written to the states, seeking their views on same-sex marriage. The Centre has to say that states should be allowed to hold discussions and present their views before the court. Also, until then, the hearing should be adjourned.
