New Delhi: After the results of the Jharkhand Assembly elections, the Union Cabinet will meet today on Tuesday. There may be some major decisions in the meeting. The meeting may decide on the proposal for the allocation of funds for updates in the National Population Register (NPR). The process of updating the NPR is scheduled to begin from 1st April next year.

In all states and union territories except Assam, this campaign will run from April to September in the new year i.e. 2020. A government notification in this regard was issued in August. It is said that its objective is to create a comprehensive database of all the ordinary citizens of the country. It will also record biometric information along with population related data. NPR will be prepared under the provisions of the Citizenship Act 1955 and Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003.

It has to be prepared at the national, state, district, sub-district and local (gram sabha/town) level. According to the information released in the official website of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, it has now been decided to update the NPR along with the phase of preparing the list of houses for the Census-2021. NPR data was collected in 2010 to make the list of houses for the census-2011.
