'Internet a Threat to Democratic Polity' Government tells Supreme Court

New Delhi: The Central Government told the Supreme Court that there has been a tremendous increase in inflammatory statements, fake news and illegal and anti-national activities using internet and social media platforms. The Center has said that strong, effective and detailed rules need to be framed in this case, for which the government has requested the apex court to give another three months.

Hence, there is a need to formulate strict rules as it increases the danger on individual rights and the integrity, security and security of the country.

The government has said that there is a need to formulate effective rules regarding the accountability of social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube. Social media sites need to be made accountable for broadcasting and publicizing content. The affidavit filed by the Ministry of Electronic and Information Technology stated that the rules made in 2011 regarding intermediaries like Facebook, WhatsApp, need to be rectified. Advice and suggestions are being sought by the new rules. The ministry said that several rounds of meetings have been held with the stakeholders including social media companies.
