The government has said that there is a need to formulate effective rules regarding the accountability of social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube. Social media sites need to be made accountable for broadcasting and publicizing content. The affidavit filed by the Ministry of Electronic and Information Technology stated that the rules made in 2011 regarding intermediaries like Facebook, WhatsApp, need to be rectified. Advice and suggestions are being sought by the new rules. The ministry said that several rounds of meetings have been held with the stakeholders including social media companies.
